How to Stop Drinking as a Christian Woman: Lessons from Whole30 Day 1
By Holly Wilson
As more Christian women stop drinking and seek faith-based alternatives for stress relief, I’m sharing my own journey of transformation—starting with an unexpected parallel: my first days of doing the Whole30. In case you don't know, the Whole30 is an eating plan that eliminates all forms of sugar so you can slay the sugar dragon!
Day 1 started off with a bang! You know those days that seem designed to test every ounce of your resolve? The ones that send you straight to the wine rack or the freezer for that hidden stash of key lime pie? Well, my first day of Whole30 was exactly that kind of day.
It started at 3 AM (yes, really) with my dog Coco playing wildlife warrior in the backyard. Instead of tossing and turning or reaching for something to help me drift back to sleep, I decided to lean into my morning time with God. Little did I know how crucial this early morning surrender would become.
The day's Scripture was James 1:2-4: "Consider it pure joy my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."
When God’s Timing is Perfect
What followed was an early morning networking meeting and a marathon 9-hour online seminar with zero breaks (not exactly ideal for Day 1 of any new eating plan!), and just when I thought I could finally rest, at 8:30 pm I discovered 200 tiles that needed hand-cleaning before the next morning's backsplash installation. Past me would have been several glasses of wine deep by this point. Current me would have been reaching for that emergency key lime pie in the freezer.
But here's where everything changed.
Instead of reaching for my old coping mechanisms, I remembered that morning's Scripture. Every setback is a setup for future success, and God was giving me a chance to build spiritual endurance. Just like He does when we're learning to live alcohol-free.
Turning to God Not Alcohol: The Power of New Choices
Speaking of change, let me tell you about Day 2, because this is where the magic of neuroplasticity–our brain's ability to form new pathways—really shines through.
I faced the same marathon webinar schedule, but something was different. That successful first day, challenging as it was, had already started building new neural pathways in my brain. Instead of feeling anxious about how I'd cope, I felt a quiet confidence. I knew what to expect, and more importantly, I knew I could handle it with God's help.
This is exactly what happens when you start your alcohol-free journey. Each day of choosing a different response to stress builds upon the success of the day before. While "one day at a time" is a helpful mindset when you're feeling overwhelmed, there's also beautiful momentum in recognizing how each victory creates a foundation for the next one.
For me, Day 1 of Whole30 was a massive success, but not because of perfect eating (though I did stick to the plan). It was a success because I achieved my primary goal: remembering to turn to God in challenging moments instead of reaching for substances that only provide temporary relief. That spiritual victory right out of the gate set the tone for everything that followed.
This mirrors what so many women in our community experience when they begin their alcohol-free journey. That first time you face a stressful situation and choose prayer over pouring a drink? That's not just a single victory–it's literally rewiring your brain's response to stress. You're building new neural pathways that align with your faith and values, replacing old coping mechanisms with life-giving choices.
Science tells us it takes about 66 days to form a new habit, but God's word reminds us that transformation is possible in any moment we choose to surrender to Him. I quote Romans 12:2 often because it tells us, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." This renewal happens both spiritually and neurologically every time we choose a different response to life's challenges.
What Christian Women Stop Drinking Need to Know: Three Essential Lessons
Here are three powerful lessons I learned in the first couple of days of my Whole30 challenge that apply to breaking any habit—whether it's daily drinking, sugar dependency, or mindless scrolling:
1. Preparation Is Your Power Move
Just like I had Whole30-approved snacks ready for unexpected challenges (boiled eggs, nuts, cherry tomatoes, avocados, and clean-eating beef sticks), anyone taking a break from alcohol needs their own "emergency kit." Stock your fridge with alcohol-free alternatives. Have those sparkling waters, mocktail ingredients, or non-alcoholic wines ready for when stress hits. Your future self will thank you.
2. Your Support System Is Your Lifeline
My husband's understanding and support made all the difference - right down to preparing my Whole30-compliant taco salad while he enjoyed his regular nachos. When you're breaking free from alcohol, having someone in your corner isn't just helpful—it's essential. Whether it's a spouse, friend, mentor, or faith-based community, don't try to go it alone.
3. Prayer Over Pressure
When I hit that wall at 8:30 PM, facing 200 tiles that needed cleaning, it wasn't willpower that got me through—it was prayer. Remembering that morning's Scripture about considering trials as joy gave me the perspective shift I needed. The same applies when you're facing triggers or cravings in your alcohol-free journey. Turn to prayer first, not your old coping mechanisms.
Breaking Free from Alcohol: How These Lessons Transform Your Journey to Freedom
What strikes me most about this first day is how similar these challenges are to the early days of living alcohol-free. The planning, the mental shifts, the moments when you have to pause and remember your 'why.' But just as God provides everything we need for living a life free from alcohol, He provides everything we need for any challenge we undertake in His name.
As I continue this Whole30 journey, I'm reminded that every transformation—whether it's changing how we eat or breaking free from alcohol—is ultimately a spiritual journey. It's about surrendering our old coping mechanisms and trusting God to meet our needs in healthier ways.
Stay tuned for more updates and insights as I continue this 30-day adventure. And remember, whether you're just curious about living alcohol-free or ready to make a change, you don't have to do it alone. God's got you, and so does our community.
